I have always been told that bucks will stay with bucks in the summer. I have just checked my camera and I have photos of bucks, with about an inch of antler grown at the end of may with does. I can't seem to figure out where the bucks are traveling. I am hunting just off of about 100 acres of corn fields as well. There is a thicket that divideds me and the corn field with about 60 yards of thick brush and it looks like the deer use it pretty frequently. Could they be moving at night? I have turned the flash off of the camera because I dont want to turn them off their game trail. Any suggestions?

deer are moving all the time right now there is so much food in the woods they are hard to pattern. so don't feel bad. The best thing to do is look for deer sign from last year this will give you a heads up for where they bucks will be traveling. remember where there is doe there will be buck and at some point the buck will find the doe to make potato salad with so don't give up? They will move at night but don't worry about your cam, just don't check it all the time they will sent you, the air is thick in the summer.

Great advice man..It is true the deer are staying back in the woods more this year. No need to come to the fields as much. I have seen way fewer bucks in the fields..As far as the buck being with the does. You will see them young bucks still hang with the does in the summer sometimes. Thye bigger ones though will usually have their own group of guys they stay with until late sept..As far as your flash, as long as your not in their bedding area I would not worry about it. You will get way more pics of the big ones at night than during the day.

Reason why I turned off the flash is because I have hunted some monster bucks, and we have had some luck with them, but it was after several years of hard hard hunting. I watched on two different occasions deer actually walk up the trail, and walk around the back side of the tree the camera was strapped to. I had a buck change his pattern last year as I watched him opening day approach to the 15 yard trail I anticipated, stare at the camera and loop through the woods behind the camera and back onto the trail. So if anyone has proof that the flash doesn't bother them please let me know because I would love to flip it back on. I had been changing the camera in different spots every weekend. Should I just let it sit and not go back in to turn on the flash? I guess I kinda just look at it that if I woke up to piss and get a drink in the middle of the night and this flash went off in my face, I wouldn't be thrilled about walking back into that situation again....

Hahaha..You have a good point there..I think some deer it bothers and some it dont personally. I too have watched them about do a backflip when the flash goes off and then I have seen others stand there and keep right on feeding. You can never be too cautious with big deer for sure..The only way to beat it is with a infared camera such as a no flash. Best bet unless you are a camera nut like me is to stay out of there if you think a big one is there. Chances are that by the time we get his picture we have already educated him that we were there..But i sure love them pics..LOL Good luck man

Each and every time in the woods we learn something about our sport..In scouting for summer-time Bucks stay very clean and try to scout mid mornining-afternoon..We even carry un-sented wetnaps to keep supa sent free..!!! Look near water Beaver Dams..Brooks..Swamps for big buck tracks..It will be warm in mid Sept so I set up near water and Raspberrys for the first few weeks..Good luck ..!!!

All good points, and thank you. I am trying to stay out of the woods but the temptation of checking stands, and the camera are there. It sucks, especially that I have only hung stands and not cut shooting lanes. This life of everyday work takes up to much of my life. Couple more years and its straight hunting and fishing guiding trips. I meet Bone at the Wildlife taxidermy show a few weeks back. My family owns several thousand acres in GA and some land way up in Whitefield NH, maybe get an opportunity to do some filming with you guys sometime. JB

Jonny B..By no means should you stay out of the wood-line.. When you find a hot spot set up quickly and move on to the next..Check the book but shinning for Buck is a great way to get a look at whats around..I think we can shine for deer until September 1st ..?? but check with N.H.F&G on that..this is a great way to scout..Here mobility is key..N.H Buck change it up often and you gotta be ready to move with them..I shot an 8pt last year that we had shinned in August..I took him on December 5th a few miles from our incounter in Aug..Let me know when you find a hot-spot..and enter our beonvideo contest soon..!!!! Thanks and good luck..!!

Several 1000 acres you say? Always wanted to try hunting down south..Myself and prostaffer Matt Fowle were actually thinking of going down there next fall..If you ever want some company let us know. Would love to film you down there. As far as stands and cutting lanes. My suggestion is just go do it..I personally did most of my cutting a month ago in my hot spots. My opinion on new spots, hang, trim quietly and hunt the same day if possible. That way when they figure out something is different, they may already have your shaft in their lungs. Thats how i took my best NH bow buck..Hope to meet you sometime as i missed the last show.. Good luck this season

Even though I think I know a ton about deer hunting, its always good to hear other thoughts and try techniques. The big boys don't get big by being stupid, so thanks again for your advice. I would like to get to talk to you guys about your show, what you have to offer and some of my future ideas as well. I live in Southern NH, and work in the greater Burlington VT area. Tons of land, and tons of deer. I just need to get to know the laws and regulations. Enjoy the weekend, let the count down begin to NH Deer Season.

We are..Why do you ask? Some of us do enjoy going out of New England to hunt when we can afford to do so. I am always willing to hunt any state I can. A new challenge is always fun. But there is no challenge or reward like the one you get hunting here in my opinion..

WE are true New England deer hunters..!!! Look at our vids and it otta sum it up..I personally have only hunted in N.H. and V.T. but I will gladly rep our awesome state of N.H. and all her hard-workin sportsmen anytime,anywhere.. I can't wait to Elk hunt in Oregon next fall for a week with Armand..My family has a pile of land in Jordan Valley that is renound for Elk,Bear and Cougar...We want to Bow hunt for Elk once before they toss my ashes in a Buck--scrape on the top of Sunapee..!!! I'm as New Hampshire as it gets so please don't take it personally if we hammer some nice game elsewhere Representing our fellow NEW ENGLAND SPORTSMEN..So if Jonny B is kind enough to invite a few of us to his state to hunt ya we will enjoy the adventure I'm sure..New England Style of coarse...LOL

Haven't responded in a few weeks, I have been on business way up in Vermont. Tons of turkeys and deer. FYI to you fellas who hunt Vermont. They passed a law this year for an extra tag here in the state to take an antler less deer. 20 days in the count down for New Hampshire carbon slinging season. You guys been spotting any good bucks this summer? Im not seeing squat, however I have been damn good sign. Hope all is well. JB

I am hunting on a plot of land that if you picture it is on a slight incline of a hill, then drastically moves steep up hill where there has not been much deer sign this summer. However, when they were yarded up they had droppings every 6 inches and the path looked black. I have a photo I need to dig out to forward along. There is not one sign through there now. At the base of the hill there is a swamp, with some decent activity where I set up a stand. If you move up the hill 30 yards behind me I have two corn fields, and 30 yards on the other side of the corn fields I have a stand set up off of a MONSTER rub. But again no photos on my trail camera. (Flash was turned off) The stand with the rub is pretty thick into the woods, however the one by the swamp there is some open cover. I have a feeling there is a pretty big deer lurking through the woods there.... Any thoughts with out seeing this land where you guys may hunt on Sept 15th? Im a duck hunter at heart, so I want to drop my limit before the wing season starts and give me the best chances. Give me some feedback!!!!

This is a tough one to answer without seeing the land really..But a few thoughts are these.. If the cornfields are of any size alot of the time the deer will bed and feed right in the corn, no reason to leave it really. That would explain some of your lack of pictures. How large and thick is the swamp? Any oaks near by? The deer poop every where from winter is awesome but the deer from what I have seen rarely hang in the same area this time of year compared to where they yard. Unless it was a good food source such as apples, oaks, or beech. Any old scrapes in the area? If so hang your camera on them. Sounds dumb but trust me..

No scrapes that I have seen as of yet. But I also live right behind the land I hunt on. I am nervous that if I spend to much time in the woods, the deer are going to cash in their chips and head else where. They dont get big by being stupid, however I do plan on taking as much time and full day hunting if it is a possibility. as I mentioned I am a bird hunter at heart, and have been written up in a few hawk eye articles for shooting geese with my bow in the early season. Its good practice, if you guys want some early wood slinging try it out- its pretty fun.

Jonny B.. If you are shooting Geese with a bow any time soon holla..Are you calling them or spot and stalk..either way that's a feat..As the season draws close the temp will play a role in stand selection..you can bet it will still be warm on our opener so...the mornings will be the coolest part of the day making a.m. conducive to more Buck movement...look near your water...swamp with thick understory for fresh tracks...a bruser will get up and DRINK a few times a day..more than not it's hot right off ..We have a stand in a swamp at the base of a hill with an orachard on top...this grass is chest high with a clear brook runnin through it some times the deer don't come in till 10 but they do show up to drink and bed near the cool water..
