I love to hunt during the rut, and live to find an active scrape line or rub line in the fall that I can drag a rag through, hang a dripper over, and then set up on. I've killed three really nice bucks this way, and had three other botched oportunities because of the wind...my own stupidity. The one thing that I haven't done a lot of is calling and rattling. I've heard mixed reviews of when and where it works in our area. And the few times that I have tried it has spooked the buck. Have any of you had any success with calling and/or rattling in NH or VT?

Hazle-butta.. I've had a ton of luck with Northwoods Common Scents and hammering the horns...I'm no Xpert on the subject but have taken a few nice ones using Buck Urine..Buck with Tarsel..I once shot a 204 lb 20 inch 9 prong ratteling, grunting and dumping Northwood in His scrapes..plus a few of my own..It was the 5th day of dark to dark hunting the same stand..He came right to His scrape at 11am after calling every hour or so..This paticular stand is 30 ft on a nice oak finger...when I call I gotta be over 25ft or I think they will smell me..??

Scotty as you have witnessed from our trips to Maine, I have had some great luck rattling in some beauties and also have scared a monster from Bud lol cause it was already with a doe, I find it has to be the rught situation and timing, but boy when it happens and you see a 140 class buck forty feet from you with horns still in hand it makes a pretty exciting situation.

Hammer, you definitely have rattled in some beauties in Maine...right place at the right time. The last corker that you rattled in and shot might have also been attracted to the residual scent that was left on you from the night before...just kidding. I found calling and rattling to be a waist of time last year in Ohio though because no matter what we did we couldn't call those big bucks away from the does. Guess it was a good learning experience. Can't wait to hunt public land and Bennington Road out there this year!

You guys got to Ohio one week too late for rattling..The 1st to the 10th is about it for hard running into horns in my opinion..You HAVE to be in the midwest between the 4th and 10th to have your best hunt in my opinion..5th,6th,7th are always the best..Watch any video and they will kill most their deer that week.. Good luck this year boys,,Wish I was going.

When you hunted in Illinois did you also use scents? I brought scent eliminator, cover scent and Tinks with me last year to Ohio. The scent eliminator definitely worked...I had three small bucks circle down wind of me and walk right under my stand during one mornings hunt. As far a cover scents go, if I use them, I'd rather rub cedar bows on me instead of a manufactured cover scent. The Tinks never brought anyting in to one of the scrape lines that I sat over during the week and spooked the does. Will Tinks or Northwoods work between the 1st and 10th of November?

MY Opinion...If your gonna run scent from the 1st to the 8th and you are going to be rattling bring some Northwoods Buck urine..If you want to do a drag, run some doe estrus. You are correct, if they are not in heat the estrus will spook the does. They do not want them bucks harassing them when they are not in.. Thats what works for me..

I'm definitely going to give it a chance. I saw the buck of a lifetime (white, tall, picket fence of horns every where...180 class) at about 140 yards last years in Ohio. Unfortunately, he had his nose right on the tail of a doe and I knew that I wouldn't get an opportunity. I came out of the woods that night so wound up! I'll try anything this year...just hope we hit it right.
