Have any of you guys tried planting food plots over the years. Is their anything that you find grows real well in New England? About every field has clover. Does Chickory, Oats, or Soybean grow well? When should they be planted?

Most of us here at Real Deal do not have any land to plant plots on. But I think any of them will grow as long as the land is set up correctly with the right PH. correct amount of Lyme, fertilizer..I think spring and early fall are best times to plant. Especially right before a rain.
CUB could answer this the best probably..I believe he has planted some for people before..
Thanks

Armand nailed it.The PH level in your soil is the most important thing.Get your soil tested.....I've had great results with Chickory,Clover,Oats,Barrasca's.I planted a small plot at my house and there are deer there every day.Just Chickory and Clover. Most of the plots I've planted were done in early to mid August,Rain is the single most important factor followed by sunny days.Hope this helps......

I've got an awesome spot for a food plot...a 6-year old, 7 acre clear cut that that I own, that is overgrowing with black berries and that is loaded with bears. But, the cost to develop it, maintain it, etc. can be crazy. I'm not sure that I could get out there to mow it. Wonder if the NHF&G would provide assistance for an apple orchard?

After this season is over maybe we could get QDMA to provide the seeds...Doug? BTW - West Lebanon Feed Supply is sponsoring a food plot seminar on September 16 at the Radison Hotel. The owner, Kurt Jakes, stopped in to see me yesterday and wanted me to let people know. The cost is $25 pp, starts at 6:00 pm (I think), and there will door prizes given away (one gun, tree stand, and othe stuff). They carry seeds for food plots but are very expensive.

Scott,QDMA is not going to give you any seeds.Afriend of mine is on the board for the upper valley chapter. They are more about teaching you how to grow a food plot and to manage your property for Quality deer. You can't beat Walmart for prices on seed, they sell biologic seeds cheap.I've got less than a hundred dollars in my plot which is about a 1/4 acre.(not including Excavation).I get that pretty cheap:)

Doug: I know what QDMA is and what they offer (all good with good intentions). I had a great chat with Roscoe Blaisdell (official state scorer, QDMA life member and professional affiliate of mine) at last years banquet about who QDMA was and what it had done for him (again all positive). Unfortunately, Jerome's persistance upset a few of us this last year and then this spring, and this resulted with us discontinuing our memberships in QDMA. Did you get your seeds from Walmart? I wouldn't mind putting in a 300 square-foot food plot. Any cost ideas?
Sounds to me like lake trout fishing is going to be my cheapest option.

My Chickory is coming up great. This wet weather has really made everything grow well.

Has any one ever tried planting that HotSpot stuff they have at Wallmart? How early have you planted it?
