Well... Rifle is now over for me in NH! I had seen this buck on thursday evening of november 13th just after shooting hours on a dead run through a field. I got a good enough look at him to know that he had a decent set of antlers, but no chance of chasing him that day. I hunted at my Camp in Northern Vt. for the rifle opener, and went back after him on Tuesday the 18th. I didnt know the area of woods (where he went) very well, but after looking at a topo map of that ridge, I had a pretty good idea where to go. I hiked up the hill side, about a half mile to the top, and grunted a few times. I sat there for a half hour with nothing moving. So I still hunted my way over the back side where it opened up to a nice hardwood hill side all the way down to a swamp. I stepped onto a rock to get a better view and he blew up out of the whips 40 yards in front of me. He ran out to 90 yards or so and stopped broad side... had the crosshairs already on him and tried to steady my off hand shot as best I could and squeezed one off. Piled him in his tracks with my 30-06. What a thrill to get this deer after seeing him the week before and now having my hands on him. I only wish the memory and the moment had been laid down on film. TIme to buckle down and fill some tags on film now LOL.
