Max Mauer
Max has been in a wheelchair for the past 4 years. This was his first time hunting. Bill, Travis and I (Rick Miller) had taken him out two weeks earlier to see how he would do shooting from a
wheelchair. With his first two shots landing just below and to
the right, we said "he's good to go!" We had him set up in an old
tree fort behind Travis' house with a great deer trail about forty five yards away. It was raining all day but at about 3:45pm we took him down to the tree fort on Travis' four wheeler which he got to drive (Another big deal for the little guy!) Around 4:00pm a doe came by but wouldn't come out from behind the
tree. With only the neck and head showing, we told him to hold off and wait for a good shot. Five minutes later, this monster buck came up behind the doe, walking right past her, stopped, turned around and came back! Now they're nose to nose BROADSIDE!! I leaned in and told Max to take it. One shot right behind the front shoulder, just like we had told him and the deer was down after running only about thirty yards. At 4:05pm, we were done! As all of the parents out there know, this hunt is relived
everyday, with the hopes of bigger deer and bigger racks the next time!A big thank you to Travis DeCamp, Bill Miller, Smith River Trading Post in Danbury, NH, Terry Dube, and last, but not least, the new hunter MAX!
