The morning of December 5th, fresh snow, sunshine and huge buck tracks. What a day! I
missed a corker loping through a clear cut at about 8am. Knowing the buck would circle, I flipped on it, right? Left? I took the left. 1 1/2 hours later I
switched to the right moving 1/4 mile each time. BANG! Fresh tracks. A bunch of deer were in the area. Low hemlocks and blow down humix. A doe pops up at 20 yards, then at 90 yards, a rack buck appears, walking up a side bank. I put my fly line front side post behind his shoulder and let it go WHAM! The buck humped up, and it was on!!Well, I'll give you the short version. Two towns and 15 miles round & round, gun jam, lost GPS, battery dead cell phone, out of food and no clue where I was. Now it's dark thirty. Eating snow and headed down hill. Thank God my Newbury huntin club buddies knew which mounting range I was hunting and were driving around tooting their horns. I made it to their rig at 9:00pm. Thanks Joe & Scott! I owe you one.Doug and I were on the track at 6:30 the next morning. The buck was hurt with a broken front leg. I had fresh snow, a distinct track and awesome woodsmen in Doug. I was determined to hunt this buck until the great state of New Hampshire told me to get out of the woods, right around the 15th.
After and exciting and exhausting day of tracking with two more missed opportunities, one each,
Cub and I had lunch and got our second wind. It was 2:30 on the 6th, the zig zagtrack told me he
was looking to bed! Slowing up Cub's Rhino fired up. "Right behind ya Bone, he's getting ready to bed." Moving through the hemlocks, I caught him bedded down looking fhe other way. One giant step right, so I could get a bead on him and it was over. TOUCHDOWN! What an adventure. Thanks Doug, we hauled a couple of beauts out of the woods together this year. Looking forward to next year. Thanks to all of our fellow sportsmen for the e-mails and photos. Get pumped to be in our next DVD by sending an email to beonvideo@realdealne.com. Let's show 'em how you do it in New England
